Astoria, Oregon, is famous for Chinook salmon fishing. Known locally as “kings,” these salmon are prized by anglers across the country. The Chinook return to the Columbia River to spawn, making the waters surrounding Astoria an ideal destination for salmon fishing enthusiasts.
Along with those big kings, we also will be fishing for hordes of coho salmon, which many of us call silvers. This would be the world-famous Buoy 10 fishery. Which generally opens August 1st.
2025, Astoria, Oregon, ocean salmon season
The 2025 salmon fishing season will open in June I will update soon as the days are released in the Pacific Ocean, just outside of Astoria, Oregon. Anglers can keep both chinook and fin-clipped coho salmon. The final decision on the daily bag limit for salmon is still pending approval from the ODFW. However, it appears that the recommendation will be for a limit of two adult salmon, of which only one can be a Chinook salmon that is at least 22 inches long. Coho salmon must be at least 16 inches long. Salmon will hang outside the mouth of the Columbia River for days, or even weeks, feeding on massive schools of baitfish before they enter the estuary along the Astoria shoreline.
Astoria, charter fishing guide boat.
As an Astoria fishing charter and fishing guide I operate a 27-foot boat that’s ready for the sea out of Astoria, Oregon. I offer salmon fishing charters and guided fishing trips throughout the salmon season. My vessel is outfitted with the latest electronics, such as radar, GPS, and a Lowrance fish finder. With my knowledge of the Astoria waters, I’ll ensure you’re in the right spot for fishing. For more information about the guide and charter boat, click here.
Columbia River salmon season.
The Columbia River will open for retention of hatchery-marked Chinook and coho salmon at the world-famous Buoy 10 on August 1st. Buoy 10 marks the mouth of the Columbia River.
Anglers come from all over the Pacific Northwest to fish at Buoy 10, which is known for its excellent salmon fishing. However, this is a very popular spot, so it’s important to make your plans early if you want to fish there. Book an Astoria fishing guide or charter.
Astoria, Oregon Sturgeon fishing
Sturgeon is also another very popular fishery out of Astoria, Oregon. Sturgeon fishing Astoria is generally a catch-and-release activity, but these trips are lots of fun, and there’s plenty of action.
When fishing sturgeon around the Astoria area, we are generally fishing in water between 5 and 15 feet deep because that’s where the sturgeon feed on the wide flats of the Columbia River estuary.
Sturgeon fishing in shallow water is the thrill of a lifetime. A sturgeon hooked in shallow water often becomes very acrobatic. Wait ’til you get one of these leapers on your line! If you would like to Book an Astoria Oregon Sturgeon fishing charter, click here.
Astoria, Rockfish Fishing charter.
The best fishing for sea bass and lingcod in the Astoria area is around the southern jetty at the mouth of the Columbia River. This fishery is available year-round as long as the ocean and weather conditions are safe. Shore anglers can catch these species from the jetties, but boats like mine are more often able to safely reach spots that don’t get as much fishing pressure and hold larger fish, like out near the end of the sunken jetty. Halibut fishing or deep-sea fishing Astoria.
If you’re interested in deep-sea fishing, another great opportunity that starts from the Port of Astoria is halibut fishing.
These Pacific halibut make just about everybody’s favorite fish and chips, and there are good numbers of them in the sandy depths off the Astoria coastline.
Halibut fishing is seasonal, so be sure to check the current regulations for up-to-date seasons and limits. Better yet, get in touch with me if you’re interested in halibut fishing this year.
Astoria, Oregon crabbing charter.
If you’re in search of a delectable delicacy, Dungeness crab is second to none. Astoria, Oregon, stands out as one of the premier destinations for crabbing in both Oregon and Washington.
Fishing for crab is generally done in the fall and winter months, with October and November being some of the very best times to catch limits of crabs in perfect condition. 12 crab each is the limit.

Locations to crab in Astoria on the Columbia River.
My preferred locations for crab fishing are in the lower Columbia River estuary, approximately five or six miles downstream from the Port of Astoria, near the Social Security Beach area. These spots generally have an abundance of crabs, and the estuary is a picturesque place for crabbing. Another excellent area is the A jetty around the lighthouse.
Some of the most effective baits for crabbing include shad, tuna parts, and chicken. These options are known to attract crabs due to their strong scent and appealing texture, making them ideal choices for successful crabbing excursions.
