A crab trap full of freshly caught Dungeness crab on oregon free fishing weekend

When crabbing near Astoria in November, full traps are the norm. It’s a lot of fun, but wear gloves to protect your hands from the crabs’ claws.

Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife is offering a free fishing weekend on June 1–2, 2024. Anglers of all ages and abilities are invited to participate in this special event. No license or tag is required to fish for salmon, sturgeon, crab, or any other species in the Columbia River or any Oregon waterway. Of course, all participants must still follow all rules and regulations, including catch limits. This is a great opportunity to take the kids fishing and let them experience the outdoors. Or, if you’d rather, book a fishing trip with us, and we’ll be happy to show you the ropes.

Oregon free fishing opportunities

In June, there are many options for what to fish for in Oregon. You could fish for spring Chinook salmon, sturgeon, or walleye. These are some of Marvin’s favorite guide service trips. Or you could go to any Oregon lake or pond and fish for trout, bass, and panfish. If you are looking for fast action fishing, the Columbia River is full of shad in June.

Oregon’s last free day of fishing in 2024

The last day of the year for free fishing without a license or tag is during Thanksgiving weekend in 2024. If you want to go crabbing on the Oregon coast, that’s the time to do it.

There are no free weekends left in the year after Thanksgiving weekend, so if you want to go crabbing on the Oregon coast, that’s the time to do it. Crabbing is a lot of fun, and catching the crabs is a lot of fun, too. Just be sure to bring a net and a bucket, and wear gloves to protect your hands from the crabs’ claws. Book a crab fishing charter here.

Did you enjoy free fishing in Oregon? I would love to hear about your free fishing weekend. Did you go with friends and family, or did you go alone? Did you fish in a new location, or did you go back to a favorite spot? Most importantly, did you catch anything? If you did, please tell us in the comments below.
