I’ve been fishing for sturgeon in the Portland, Oregon, area for years, and it’s one of my favorite fishing spots. The sturgeon range in size from 4 to 11 feet long, so there’s plenty of excitement for everyone on board. The larger sturgeon can weigh up to 1,000 pounds, so you know you’re in for a fight if you hook into one. The smaller ones are still a lot of fun to catch, and they’re a lot easier to handle. If you’re lucky, you might even hook into a sturgeon that’s over 10 feet long. Those fish are truly amazing creatures, and they’re sure to provide you with a lifetime of memories.

What bait should I use for a sturgeon?

One of my favorite baits for giant sturgeons is shad. I will use the entire shad for giant sturgeon. Squid and sandshrimp are also excellent bait for sturgeon.

We will also be offering shad fishing trips in the Portland, Oregon, area. When season allows, we won’t do combo sturgeon in shad trips on the same day.

Spring and summer will be great times to catch big, quality sturgeon. The largest freshwater fish in North America is a sturgeon.

Can I keep a sturgeon?

Sturgeon is mostly all catch and release, but there will be a very small window in January 2024 to fish above Bonneville Dam for some keepers to help fill the freezer.

Fishing for keeper sturgeon will likely be in Cascade Locks or Hood River, Oregon, depending on weather.

There is potential for another sturgeon season on the Columbia River in 2024 in Astoria, Oregon, Watch for updates here. 2024 is no season to keep sturgeons.

Official information from Oregon and Washington Fish and Wildlife offices for the 2024 season Keep an eye on the blog or the Marvin’s Guide Service Facebook page to get the information as soon as we have it.

Opportunities for the 2024 sturgeon season will fill fast, so book your date now.

The sturgeon fishing season above Bonneville Dam has ended for the year. However, sturgeon fishing is still open for catch and release. If you want to fish for sturgeon above Bonneville Dam, you must release the sturgeon immediately after catching it. This regulation is in place to protect the sturgeon population in the Columbia River. This post was last updated on January 16, 2024.
