I’m so excited about the upcoming Columbia River Buoy 10 salmon fishing season, which starts on August 1. Buoy 10 is located at the mouth of the Columbia River near Astoria, Oregon. This year, the return of Chinook salmon is predicted to be huge, and there should also be an excellent run of coho salmon. It should be a wild time with lots of hookups and great action for anglers fishing the lower Columbia River.

I can’t wait to get out there and start guiding salmon fishing trips again. I’ll keep this Buoy 10 fishing report page updated with current fishing reports and salmon updates throughout the season.

Buoy 10 Fishing Locations

The Columbia River is a massive waterway loaded with salmon during the Buoy 10 season. There are many productive fishing areas near Astoria, Hammond, and Warrenton where anglers target Chinook and coho salmon. This guide covers some of my favorite Buoy 10 salmon fishing locations and should help anglers better understand where to start fishing the Columbia River during the fall salmon run.

Where Is Buoy 10 Located Exactly?

Buoy 10 is a large red navigation buoy located near the mouth of the Columbia River close to Astoria, Oregon. It marks the deadline before entering the Columbia River Bar and the Pacific Ocean. This area is one of the most famous salmon fisheries on the West Coast because migrating Chinook and coho salmon stack up here before heading upriver.

One of my favorite trolling patterns is to start near Buoy 10 and troll with the tide upriver for a couple of miles before circling back down and repeating the drift. This technique consistently produces salmon throughout August and September.

Another Great Area to Fish Near Buoy 10

The Sawdust Pile is another one of my favorite Buoy 10 salmon fishing spots. It’s located a few miles upriver from the Hammond Boat Basin on the Oregon side of the Columbia River.

I like fishing around the green buoy and trolling with the tide through this area. The Sawdust Pile is a popular location during the Buoy 10 season and has produced many Chinook and coho salmon over the years.

How to Rig for Columbia River Buoy 10 Salmon Fishing

When fishing Buoy 10 for salmon, I typically run Brad’s Super Bait and Yakima Bait SpinFish on two rods. I usually fish with 20 to 24 ounces of lead depending on the current and troll flashers paired with cut-plug herring on the other rods.

This setup has consistently worked well for me while targeting Chinook and coho salmon in the Columbia River near Astoria. You can learn more techniques and salmon fishing tips by reading my detailed guide on how to fish Buoy 10 for salmon.
