How I Like to Prepare Salmon

I get asked all the time by clients how I like to prepare salmon after a successful fishing trip. In this article, I will share a few simple ways I personally like to cook the salmon I catch.

These are not necessarily in any order. They are just a few of my favorite ways to prepare fresh Columbia River salmon.

Traeger Grilled Salmon

One of my favorite ways to prepare salmon fillets with the skin left on is on my Traeger grill.

I start by coating the fish lightly with butter. Then I sprinkle it with garlic pepper and a light coating of Johnny’s seasoning. After that, I spread honey over the top of the fillet.

I usually set my Traeger grill to 350 degrees and place the salmon skin-side down directly on the grill.

Depending on the thickness of the fish, salmon usually takes around 20 to 30 minutes to cook.

This method works especially well with fresh Chinook salmon caught during the Buoy 10 salmon season.

Pan Fried Salmon

Another quick and easy way I like to prepare salmon is pan frying.

First, I like to bring the salmon close to room temperature before cooking it. About 10 minutes is usually enough.

I season the fish lightly with salt, pepper, and garlic.

Then I heat oil in a nonstick skillet over medium-low heat before increasing the heat slightly right before placing the fillet skin-side-up in the pan.

I cook the salmon until it turns golden brown on one side, usually about 4 to 5 minutes.

After that, I flip the fillet over and continue cooking until the fish feels firm to the touch, usually another 3 to 4 minutes.

You can leave the skin on or remove it easily after cooking with a knife or spoon.

Serve with your favorite side dishes and enjoy.

Baked Salmon Recipe

Baking is another great and simple way to prepare salmon.

In a small bowl, I mix olive oil, lemon juice, garlic, and sometimes fresh herbs.

I lightly brush the mixture over the salmon fillet rather than soaking it in a heavy marinade.

I usually bake salmon at 400 degrees until the fish becomes flaky, which normally takes around 10 to 15 minutes depending on thickness.

Baked salmon goes great with rice, potatoes, vegetables, or a simple salad.

Fresh Columbia River Salmon

One of the best parts about catching fresh salmon is bringing home quality fish to cook for family and friends.

Whether we are fishing for Chinook or Coho salmon, fresh Columbia River salmon is hard to beat.

When you book your salmon fishing trip with Marvin’s Guide Service, I am always happy to share additional recipes, cooking tips, and smoking techniques.
