June 19, 2023, The Dalles Oregon

The past week and a half, I’ve been sturgeon fishing in The Dalles, Oregon. So, in this article, I will give you the Dalles Oregon Sturgeon report.

First of all, this is a catch-and-release fishery. We are strictly fishing for monster-sized sturgeon that range between 7 and 10 feet long.

Sturgeon fishing in the Dalles has been very productive lately. However, the wind has made it very challenging on some days.

I have been sturgeon fishing in 70 feet of water, or deeper, using fresh shad for bait. Usually, I’ve been going down the Columbia River to Cascade Locks to catch my shad the night before. it seems like the fresher the shad, the better.

When I’m fishing for monster sturgeon, I like to use the whole shad, That’s right. A two-to-three-pound fish just for bait.

I have been averaging two to three giant sturgeon a day. Usually, that’s about all the clients could handle before they’re worn out.

We have also been using small strips of shad and having plenty of action catching smaller sturgeon.

I expect the giant sturgeon fishery to stay good and only get better as the shad die off.

When the shad start to die, I strongly suggest looking up by the dam and picking up the floating dead shad for bait, as this will be the best bait for sturgeon.

If you plan on fishing in The Dalles I recommend checking the wind forecast, As the wind could put some big swells on the Columbia River and catch you off guard.

Marvin’s Guide Service has a few days left if you’re looking to book a guided fishing trip in The Dalles for giant sturgeon.
