Hammond, Oregon, is a cool little port town, just 20 minutes west of downtown Astoria. Hammond has a population of about 1,200 people. It is one of my favorite towns on the Oregon Coast, especially as an Oregon fishing guide.

I will spend most of the summer and part of the fall there every year, offering guided fishing trips for salmon, sturgeon, and crab.

My favorite things about Hammond, Oregon

One of my favorite things about Hammond is the wildlife. You will often see elk and deer walking and feeding all over town.

Also, it’s very common to see bald eagles and so much other wildlife in and around Hammond or from my guide boat.

Hammond, Oregon Marina

Did you know that the Hammond Marina is the last marina on the Oregon side of the Columbia River before you enter the Pacific Ocean?

Or you can look at it another way; if you’re coming up the Columbia River, the Hammond Marina would be the first marina on the Oregon side of the Columbia River.

Hammond, Activities

When visiting Hammond, another favorite activity you might enjoy is touring Fort Stevens State Park. When you’re at Fort Stevens, you should be sure to check out the wreck of the Peter Iredale. You can also walk the shoreline of the Columbia River or visit the South Jetty and look at the mouth of the Columbia River and its beautiful scenery.

Hammond,Oregon fishing

But I would personally have to say the best thing about Hammond would be the fishing. Just off the jetties, you can find perch, sea bass, lingcod, and all sorts of rockfish.

And, of course, Hammond is known for salmon fishing. This is some of the best salmon fishing the Pacific Northwest has to offer in August. People flock from all over the country to fish the world-famous Buoy 10 salmon fishery right outside the Hammond Marina for Chinook and Coho salmon.

In November, Marvin’s Guide Service puts the fishing poles away, puts the top and heater in my boat, and offers Dungeness crab fishing trips out of the Port of Hammond. Dungeness crab limits are usually easy to come by in the month of November, and crab are plenty full of meat and are delicious.

You’re able to get your crab processed and cooked right at the Hammond Marina at a little extra charge.
