September and October are popular months for fall Chinook salmon fishing in Tillamook Bay. When seasons and conditions allow, I may also set crab pots during a salmon trip.

Fishing the Tide in Tillamook Bay

I have fished near the Coast Guard tower and trolled toward the Ghost Hole, adjusting the route to salmon movement, tides, and weather. Fishing near the bay mouth or bar requires suitable conditions; it is not part of every trip.

When the current allows, I may troll against the tide with about 10 to 16 ounces of lead. Trolling with the tide can also be productive. I adjust the weight, depth, speed, and direction for the conditions.

Herring and Salmon Presentations

I use cut-plug herring or whole herring, often favoring whole herring. The presentation depends on the current, water depth, and how the salmon are biting.

Adding Dungeness Crabbing

I have set crab pots on the north side of the south jetty, then returned during the day to check the catch and refresh the bait. The location and soak time depend on conditions. Combination trips are available only when regulations, weather, and the fishing plan allow.
