The area is renowned for its variety of fish, including salmon, sturgeon, walleye, and panfish like bass, crappie, and perch, with salmon being a particularly prized catch in the Columbia River.

When is salmon season in Portland, Oregon?

The Columbia River is an excellent location for salmon fishing, often beginning in March. Numerous spots along the Columbia River are ideal for this activity, but my preferred starting point for guided trips is in the vicinity of the PDX airport.

Portland is renowned for its excellent fall salmon fishing. The season typically begins on August 1st on the Columbia River. Many anglers flock to the lower Columbia near Astoria, Oregon, an area referred to as Buoy 10. In Portland, the pursuit for fall Chinook salmon starts in September.

Portland fishing offers sturgeon fishing trips year-round on the Columbia and Willamette Rivers. Most sturgeon fishing is a catch-and-release fishery, so you’re going to want to check with Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife to stay legal.

Panfishing is a popular year-round activity on the Columbia and Willamette Rivers near Portland, Oregon. It peaks in the spring and summer when the waters warm up and the fish become more active. Bass and perch are among the most sought-after panfish in the region. Anglers typically use bait like worms to catch these fish. They can fish from the shore or by boat, employing various methods such as trolling, casting, and jigging.
