Step 1: Choose the Type of Fishing Trip
The first step is deciding what kind of fishing trip you want. Some people know exactly what they want to fish for, while others just want the best available action for the season.
If you are not sure, that is completely normal. I can help you choose the best trip based on the time of year, current fishing conditions, river levels, regulations, and what species are biting best.
Popular options include spring Chinook, fall Chinook, Coho salmon, trophy sturgeon, keeper sturgeon when open, Columbia River walleye, Buoy 10 salmon, and seasonal Oregon Coast fishing.
Step 2: Contact Marvin’s Guide Service
The easiest way to book is to call or text 503-314-5087. You can also use the online trip inquiry form.
When you reach out, it helps to include:
- The type of fish you want to target
- Your preferred fishing dates
- How many people are in your group
- Whether you are a beginner or experienced angler
- Where you are traveling from
- Any special questions or concerns
Once I know what you are looking for, I can help match you with the best available fishing opportunity.
Step 3: Reserve Your Fishing Date
Prime fishing dates can fill quickly, especially during peak salmon season, Buoy 10, good sturgeon windows, and productive walleye dates. Once we choose a date, your trip can be reserved.
Most guided fishing trips require a deposit to hold the date. This protects the guide’s schedule and confirms that your group is serious about the trip.
If you need to cancel or reschedule, please give as much notice as possible. Last-minute cancellations are difficult because fishing guides often turn away other customers once a date is reserved.
What Can You Expect From a Fishing Guide?
When you book a professional fishing guide, you should expect a safe, organized, and well-prepared fishing trip. Marvin’s Guide Service provides the boat, rods, reels, bait, tackle, and local fishing knowledge needed for the day.
Your trip is run from a comfortable 27-foot Alumaweld Intruder with cover, heat, electronics, and quality fishing equipment. You can learn more about the boat here: Marvin’s Guide Service fishing boat.
Fishing success can never be guaranteed, but I work hard every trip to put clients on fish and give them the best possible day on the water.

What Does the Fishing Guide Expect From You?
Before your guided fishing trip, please arrive on time, prepared, and ready for a full day on the water.
Please bring:
- A valid fishing license and required tags
- Food, drinks, and snacks
- Weather-appropriate clothing
- Sunglasses and sunscreen
- A camera or phone for photos
- A positive attitude and willingness to fish
You can purchase an Oregon fishing license through the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife. Some trips near Washington waters may require a Washington license, depending on the location and regulations.
Where Does the Guided Fishing Trip Take Place?
The exact fishing location depends on the season, target species, weather, river conditions, and current regulations. Salmon, sturgeon, and walleye move throughout the Columbia River system, so the best launch location can change.
Trips may take place near Portland, the Willamette River, the Columbia River Gorge, The Dalles, Rufus, Astoria, Hammond, Buoy 10, or other productive waters.
Your final meeting location is usually confirmed before the trip, based on where I believe we will have the best opportunity to catch fish. You can also visit my Oregon fishing trip meeting locations page for more information.
How Far in Advance Should You Book?
The sooner you book, the better your chance of getting the date you want. Some of the best fishing dates fill early, especially during salmon season and popular summer fishing windows.
If you are planning around travel, family, lodging, or a group trip, it is smart to contact me early so we can match your schedule with the best available fishing opportunity.
Can Beginners Book a Guided Fishing Trip?
Yes. Beginners are welcome. You do not need to be an expert angler to book a trip with Marvin’s Guide Service.
I provide instruction, help with gear, and explain what we are doing throughout the day. Many clients are first-time anglers, families, kids, or people who have never fished the Columbia River before.
Experienced anglers are also welcome, and I enjoy helping serious fishermen target salmon, sturgeon, and walleye on productive Northwest waters.
What Should You Wear?
Oregon weather can change quickly, especially on the Columbia River, Willamette River, and Oregon Coast. Dressing in layers is usually best.
- Wear warm layers during cold months
- Bring rain gear if weather is uncertain
- Wear comfortable shoes with good grip
- Bring sunglasses for sun and glare
- Use sunscreen during sunny weather
The boat has cover and heat, but it is still smart to dress for the day’s conditions.
Do You Keep the Fish?
That depends on the species, season, and regulations.
Some salmon and walleye trips may allow fish to be kept when seasons are open and limits are available. Many sturgeon trips are catch and release, especially trophy sturgeon fishing. Keeper sturgeon opportunities are limited and must follow slot limits and open retention days.
Fishing regulations can change, so always check current rules through ODFW fishing resources and Washington fishing regulations.
