Sea Bass, Lingcod, & Rockfish

Oregon Coast Rockfish, Sea Bass, Lingcod & Halibut Fishing Trips

Fishing for rockfish on the Oregon Coast is one of the most productive and exciting saltwater trips in the Pacific Northwest. These Pacific Ocean trips offer anglers the opportunity to catch rockfish (sea bass), lingcod, and halibut while enjoying some of the most scenic ocean fishing found anywhere on the West Coast.

At Marvin’s Guide Service, we specialize in Oregon rockfish fishing trips designed to put you on fish while keeping safety, comfort, and success as the top priorities. Fishing locations vary based on ocean conditions, seasonal movements, and target species, allowing us to consistently find productive water.

Oregon Coast Rockfish Fishing Locations

We offer Pacific Ocean fishing trips departing from some of the most productive ports on the Oregon Coast, including:

  • Astoria, Oregon – Access to deep offshore structure and productive bottom fishing grounds

  • Garibaldi, Oregon – Excellent rockfish and lingcod fishing with shorter offshore runs

  • Depoe Bay, Oregon – Known as the world’s smallest harbor and one of the most efficient offshore fishing ports

  • Newport, Oregon – A historic fishing town with quick access to prime bottom fishing areas

Each port offers unique advantages depending on weather, sea conditions, and target species.

Rockfish, Sea Bass, and Lingcod Fishing in Oregon

Oregon’s coastal waters are home to numerous species of rockfish, commonly referred to as sea bass, along with aggressive and hard-fighting lingcod. These fish relate to rocky reefs, pinnacles, and underwater structure found throughout the Pacific Ocean.

Lingcod are especially prized for their size and fight, with fish commonly exceeding 20 pounds. Because of their strength and powerful headshakes, stout rods and quality reels are recommended to handle these fish effectively.

Rockfish species commonly encountered include:

  • Black sea bass

  • Blue sea bass

  • China rockfish

  • Yellowtail and other reef-associated species

Halibut Fishing Opportunities

While targeting rockfish and lingcod, anglers also have opportunities to encounter Pacific halibut when seasons and regulations allow. Halibut are among the most sought-after bottom fish on the Oregon Coast and make an excellent addition to any offshore fishing trip when conditions align.

Oregon Rockfish Bag Limits and Regulations

Oregon fishing regulations are managed by the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife (ODFW) and can change seasonally.

Current regulations generally allow:

  • 3 lingcod per angler, minimum length 22 inches

  • Up to 4 rockfish per day, including multiple sea bass species

Because regulations can change, we always recommend checking ODFW regulations prior to your trip or asking us for the latest updates when booking.

Oregon Coast Rockfish Fishing Season

Rockfish and lingcod fishing on the Oregon Coast is open year-round, weather permitting. Ocean conditions play a major role in trip availability, but when seas allow, fishing can be outstanding in any season.

One of the highlights of Oregon ocean fishing is the wildlife viewing. It’s common to see:

  • Bald eagles and seabirds

  • Gray whales during migration

  • Bottlenose dolphins

  • Occasional orca sightings

These trips are enjoyable for anglers of all ages and experience levels.

How Far Offshore Do We Fish?

The distance traveled offshore depends on the departure port and ocean conditions:

  • Depoe Bay & Newport – Often just a few miles offshore to reach productive reefs

  • Garibaldi – Moderate offshore runs with excellent bottom structure

  • Astoria – Can require runs of up to 20 miles offshore to reach prime fishing areas

Our goal is always to fish efficiently while maximizing time on productive water.

Fish Processing & Group Accommodations

After your trip, your entire catch can be processed right at the marina for convenience. We accommodate:

  • Small private groups

  • Larger parties using multiple boats

This allows everyone to enjoy a comfortable and productive fishing experience.

Add Dungeness Crab to Your Rockfish Trip

When booking your Oregon Coast rockfish fishing trip, be sure to ask about dropping crab pots on the way out. For a small additional charge, we can combine rockfish and Dungeness crab fishing on the same trip.

Fresh Dungeness crab and Pacific rockfish make for one of the best meals you’ll ever have.
