Well people Oregon fish and wildlife set the Sturgeon season for the Willamette River today.
I don’t like it, but what can I do? We only get 4 days of Sturgeon fishing on the Willamette river.

Sturgeon retention season on the Lower Willamette River (including Multnomah Channel and the Gilbert River) will be open Feb. 17-18 and Feb. 24-25 2012

The shortened harvest season is in response to a continued decline in the abundance of legal-sized fish in both the Willamette and Columbia rivers. Last week, the directors of Oregon and Washington departments of fish and wildlife agreed on a reduction in the harvest rate for both rivers from 22.5 percent to 16 percent for 2012. That’s a 38 percent reduction in the number of fish that can be harvested from the Willamette, and a 2012 harvest guideline between 1,768 and 2,022 fish.

I do expect some great Sturgeon fishing, I also expect huge crowds of people out there. the daily bag limit is one fish with a fork length between 38 and 54 inches!

Winter is just around the corner, and you might be asking yourself what am I going to do on some of these cold, rainy days?

Well, How about fishing in Portland Oregon with Marvin’s Guide Service because we have a covered and heated boat, an we will do some winter Sturgeon fishing!

In November and December we will be Sturgeon fishing on the Columbia River around the mouth of the Willamette River; this always provides some great fishing action.

January we will be fishing on the Colombia River above Bonneville Dam, around Cascade Locks, Oregon. This fishery is usually allowed 7 days a week and you will find plenty of fat Sturgeon here.

Don’t forget about the Willamette River! We’re still waiting to hear from ODFW on the opening day, it might be as early as January 1st, or later in February. I can tell you this: when the Willamette opens it is going to be some Wild Sturgeon fishing, and, as always, the Willamette River won’t stay open for Sturgeon fishing very long.

If you would like to get on the list to fish the Willamette River when it opens please call now and I will get you on the list. Days go fast for Willamette River Sturgeon fishing. On the Willamette you are only allowed to keep Sturgeon 3 day’s a week when it opens; Thursday-Saturday.

Call now and book a day for sure in Cascade locks in January for some Winter Sturgeon fishing This should be a 7 day a week fishery.

I got a phone call last week. Instantly I was intrigued. It wasn’t the normal guide trip.
I was asked if I would like to have them do the Comcast Sportsnet show “Adrenaline Hunter,” hosted by Bethy Rossos, on my boat. They wanted to fish for monster Sturgeon on the Columbia River and heard that I was the guide to do it! Of course I said, “yes that would be great!”

We set the date to hook up on September 29th. We meet up at The Fishery on the Columbia River at 6am, well before sunrise this time of year. After we talked for a bit, we headed down to the river. Man, let me tell you, we were really up for a challenge. The east wind was blowing around 30 mph making conditions tough – and most resident fishermen can tell you, east wind usually turns the bite off.

I had Bethy Rossos in my boat, a producer and one camera man. My friend Mark, who is also a guide, was helping out in his boat with the rest of the camera crew. His job was to follow us around and try to get the best shots for the camera guys. I take my hat off to Mark, he did a great job keeping his boat on the spot, especially with that wind. Thanks, Mark.

We got our first line out in the water, and, as I was getting the 2nd rod ready, BAM! The first rod is going off and we get a fish on! That line was not in the water two minutes! I know I should almost be used to it, that first-line-bite has been good to me this year. You will have to watch the show to see how big the Sturgeon was, but if you’ve been out with me recently, I’d bet you could make a good guess.

The day ended up with four big Sturgeon, so it was a great day of Sturgeon fishing, even with the east wind blowing very hard. I will tell you this, Bethy Rossos is one tough woman, and I was lucky to get to meet a person like her. I look forward to fishing with her again.

Be sure to watch the show to see all the great action, I will come back to this post and update when I know the date it will air

I want to give a big thank you to Comcast Sportsnet and Bethy Rossos for using Marvin’s Guide Service for “Adrenaline Hunter.”

Today 9-8-2011 I had to guys that wanted to do some Sturgeon fishing on the Columbia River, The river is catch and release this time of year, but that was ok because we were after the monster Sturgeon of the Columbia River anyway! I met up with Denny and Duane at 615 am at the fishery witch is just a few miles down River from Bonneville Dam.Both of the guys have fished with me on many different fishing trips.

So I headed down river from the fishery about 3 miles or so, I got my boat all lined up in one of my favorite spots to fish, we were in 73 feet of water, I tied a shad on the first rod and set it in the rod holder, did the same with the 2nd rod, and as I was baiting up my rod the first rod got a strike, and fish on, don’t think we had are lines in the water 5 minuet, then about 30 minuets later we had a 9 foot Sturgeon up to the boat.

After a few high fives we got are line back out, and I would say in around 10 minuets we had another Sturgeon on, this one was about 7 foot, landed and let go.

20 minuets later we had fish number 3 on about 8 foot, Duane and Denny are getting tired this fish are tough.

Then things kind of slowed we got about 10 or so Small Sturgeon, then all the sudden Duane sets the hook on one of the rod, line was just screaming off the real so the battle was on Duane fought this fish he was not going to give up, for a hour an a half, when we finely landed this huge Sturgeon well over 9 foot and 500 pounds.

Denny and Duane said they were tired and had a blast catching Sturgeon, and decided to call it a early day.
I hope tomorrow will be as good Salmon fishing for Duane and Denny as we will be hooking up at the boat ramp at 6:15 tomorrow morning.

Pleas like us on Facebook!

With Summer finally coming, there is plenty of fish to be caught on the Columbia River. Here are a few of my favorites:

June Shad – the Columbia River gets a ton of shad in June, following the end of the Spring Chinook salmon migration. This is a great fishery for kids because there is always a lot of consistent action. I also like to use shad for Sturgeon bait. Shad fishing with light tackle always ensures a good time.

Summer Dinos – If you are after a monster fish over 8 feet and 400 pounds or more, well, then, let go do some Sturgeon fishing. You will catch these Sturgeon on the Columbia River all the way into September, with fishing just 30 minuets from down town Portland Oregon.

Summer Steelhead – fishing on the Columbia river is great, we also fish Steelhead just 30 minuets from down town Portland Oregon.

August Salmon – Now you should be really excited. Astoria, Oregon, Buoy 10 salmon fishing at the mouth of the Columbia River just might be some of the best salmon fishing Oregon and Washington have to offer. King salmon can get up to 50 pounds. And believe me when I say there is good salmon action, I mean good. Astoria is about a 2 hour drive from Portland, Oregon.

Call Marvin’s Guide Service today and get your day’s booked.

January 1 the Columbia River above Bonneville Dam will open for Sturgeon fishing. We will able to fish all seven days of the week, until the quota of Sturgeon are caught! I expect great fishing in this area so don’t expect the season to last long.

You don’t have to be afraid of the cold when you fish with Marvin’s Guide Service as we have a covered and heated boat.
I still have Saturday January 1 open so call me now and get in on the action with the Columbia river Sturgeon.

I launch my boat out of Cascade Locks Oregon, Cascade locks is about 4 miles or so east of Bonneville Dam.

Sturgeon need to be between 38 and 54 inch to keep them. Sturgeon are measured from the tip of the nose to the fork in the tail. (rather than the tip of the tail). You are allowed to keep 1 Sturgeon per day. You may catch and release as many as you can.
Sturgeon is all white meat, Sturgeon have no bones in them, and I think Sturgeon just might be one of the best eating fish on the Columbia River.

Don’t worry if you cant make it up the gorge for some Sturgeon fishing, you still can find plenty of Sturgeon on the lower Columbia River.

Sturgeon fishing on the Willamette river and Multnomah Channel over the weekend was fair to good.
There were plenty of small sturgeon caught this weekend, with a few keeper size sturgeon.

Squid was the bait they were biting. I did here of some fish caught on fresh smelt!
I was fishing on the Channel were it meets the Columbia river. One thing I saw which I did not like at all, was the abundance of sea lions.

Now a little story that happened to us on the Chanel while we were Sturgeon fishing, we had a little Sturgeon on, and all of the sudden the fish got big and I mean big, then it came off the hook, well that’s what we thought anyway. When we landed the Sturgeon, the tail of the fish was just hanging there, so you know what that meant, a Sea lion hit the fish.

Not cool!! When is Oregon and Washington going to do something about the sea lions in the river? They are called sea lions, Not river Lions!!

I look foward to the Sturgeon fishing getting beter every weekend.

Don’t forget ,they are saying we are going to have a great Spring Salmon season on the Columbia river this year. So call now and book your Trip!!

Here is how Marvin’s Guide Service rigs up for Sturgeon fishing on the Columbia river.

My rods are the ugly stick tiger rods, I use peen 320 gti for the reel with 80# test tuf line.

First thing I do is slide a slider up the main line, then I put 2 or 3 beads on, this just gives you a little space between you sinker and the swivel. Then I tie a barrel swivel to the main line, I like to use a 250# test swivel.

Then for my leader to the hook is 130# Dacron about 3 feet or so, Now depending on the bait I use, that will determine the size hook I use, If I am fishing with a big bait like a whole Shad then I use a size 10 hook, for smelt or squid I like a 5 or 6. all hooks have to be barbless.

Good luck and don’t forget to see us on are Sturgeon page.

please feel free to share your favorite recipes for fish on this site.

Here is one way to cook Sturgeon.

Put 1/2 cup of soy sauce in a zip lock baggie

Add one table spoon of Worcestershire sauce

Add one teaspoon of lime or lemon juice

Marinate your Sturgeon fillets in the
closed baggie for 45 to 60 minutes prior to use.

Preheat your oven or grill to 350 degrees F.

Make an appropriate sized tray of aluminum foil

Place the Sturgeon fillets in the aluminum tray
and cover and seal with another piece of aluminum foil of ample size.

Bake or grill the package of fillets at 350 degrees F. for twenty minutes.

Carefully remove the aluminum package and open —- be careful of entrapped steam.

Serve with a bake potato (one hour at 350) , spinach and/or green salad and beverage of
choice.

I will be adding some more of Marvin’s fishing guide service recipes soon, so share yours today.
