The Fist Columbia River Spring Chinook Salmon of the season 2012 has been caught by a sportsman. It was a 12 to 14 pound Chinook Salmon caught off Frenchmen’s Bar. News like this gets everyone excited for the season.

Crazy! Here it is almost Christmas and we’re talking about Spring Chinook salmon fishing in Oregon. That’s because Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife is predicting a run of 83,400 Chinook Salmon on the Willamette River this Spring. That number is slightly higher than last year’s return of 80,254. With Chinook salmon numbers like that they should be high enough for a seven-day-a-week fishery and a two fish limit when the fishing season in opens in January.

It was a quick season on the Willamette River for Sturgeon but for the most part, a very successful one.

One of the first places I like to fish for Spring salmon is on the Columbia River, trolling between the 205 bridge and the I 5 Bridge. This area has become very popular the last few years. So if you plan on fishing here, you better get your boat in the river Early in the morning.

Sturgeon fishing on the Willamette river and Multnomah Channel over the weekend was fair to good.
There were plenty of small sturgeon caught this weekend, with a few keeper size sturgeon.

When fishing on the Columbia River or Willamette River for Sturgeon in the winter,

I have found they bite very soft in the winter, That is why when I fish for them I use a lighter fishing pole.

With experts saying that the Columbia River is going to have the best run of Spring salmon since 1938, I am looking forward to great salmon fishing in the Portland Oregon area. Let me tell you last year we had plenty of action, and expecting more this year, WOW!!!!

Here are a few ways to fish for Walleye on the Columbia River in Portland Oregon.

One way is with a bottom walker and a worm harness. Troll down river very slow. Remember the saying, “if you are not hanging up you are not fishing for Walleye.” I like to fish in 8 to 20 feet of water with a rocky bottom.
