Columbia River, Buoy 10 to I-5 Bridge

Fishing will be allowed seven days a week from March 1 through April 18 or until the harvest guideline is achieved.
The season will be closed on Tuesdays, March 9, 16, 23 and 30. The purpose of the Tuesday closures is to provide possible commercial fishing days. ” Gill nets!”

The daily bag limit is two adipose fin-clipped adult salmon or steelhead in combination, of which no more than one may be a Chinook. The rules also allow retention of up to five adipose fin-clipped jack salmon per day.

Above I 5 Bridge to I 205 Bridge
This area is open to retention of adipose fin-clipped Chinook salmon seven days a week from March 1-14 and three days a week Thursday through Saturday from March 18 – April 3, or until the quota is achieved.

The season is closed Tuesday, March 9. The daily bag limit is two adipose fin-clipped adult salmon or steelhead in combination, of which no more than one may be a Chinook, and up to five adipose fin-clipped jack salmon per day.

Now the bad part is no fishing from a boat allowed above the I 205 Bridge!

What the heck was fish and wild life thinging about when the did this?

Any way I still think we will have some great fishing so get your days booked now.

We will find out next week what days we can fish, I can only hope that fish and game won’t screw us over this year. So if you want your shot at salmon fishing, you better call soon.

Sturgeon fishing on the Willamette River has been good, Squid or smelt has been a great choice of bait.

This time of year is a great time to start the day off trolling for Salmon, and the finish the day off fishing for Sturgeon.
Good luck fishing, and see you soon on the Columbia River.

When fishing on the Columbia River or Willamette River for Sturgeon in the winter,

I have found they bite very soft in the winter, That is why when I fish for them I use a lighter fishing pole.

Fist of all make sure you have a nice sharp hook. This will be most helpful. Once you get a bite, pick up your fishing pole slowly don’t rip it out of the rod holder, hold your fishing pole down low to the water, as you feel the fish bite 3 or 4 times in a row give your fishing rod a good yank straight back, after you do that wait a second or two and see if you feel the Sturgeon on, If not drop your line back down to the bottom, Because most of the time fish will come back and bite the hook again.

I hope these tips, will help you all have a sucessful day of Sturgeon fishing!!!

Here is how Marvin’s Guide Service rigs up for Sturgeon fishing on the Columbia river.

My rods are the ugly stick tiger rods, I use peen 320 gti for the reel with 80# test tuf line.

First thing I do is slide a slider up the main line, then I put 2 or 3 beads on, this just gives you a little space between you sinker and the swivel. Then I tie a barrel swivel to the main line, I like to use a 250# test swivel.

Then for my leader to the hook is 130# Dacron about 3 feet or so, Now depending on the bait I use, that will determine the size hook I use, If I am fishing with a big bait like a whole Shad then I use a size 10 hook, for smelt or squid I like a 5 or 6. all hooks have to be barbless.

Good luck and dont forget to see us on are Sturgeon page.

The other day I had to take my boat to the shop because it was running bad. I took it to Cascade Marine.

While I was there. Cascade Marine showed me what was wrong with the boat. I saw how much water had accumulated in the gas tank. When the tech took off the screw on water fuel separator and dumped it into a clear container.

WOW it was mostly water.
When the tech took off the top of the carburetor and looked inside. Oh my a half inch of salt white power accumulation in the bottom and he showed me the plugged idle jets. No other shop has treated me this way.

I like this shop. They have gone and will go the extra mile as they know I am using the boat to make my living. And time off the water is bad. My boat was up and running in a hour or so..
Very happy with the service I got here.

With warmer water this week, Sturgeon fishing as been good for both keepers and shakers.

Sturgeon will bite just fine in muddy, River. one place to fish is the stretch of river near Willamette Park on up through Milwaukee. The lower Portland harbor and down into Multnomah Channel should also have some good Sturgeon fishing.

This time of year a successful sturgeon trip can often depend on what bait is offered, and location. you should carry multiple baits and be prepared to switch until finding one that the Sturgeon like that day.

Marvin’s Guide Service has been finding success using a variety including smelt, anchovies, squid, or sand shrimp

Use a lot of smelly jelly this time of year. Don’t stay in one spot move around and find the fish.

Good luck, see you on the River.

Here is what Oregon fish and game say about 2010 Spring Salmon on the Columbia river.

SALEM, Ore. — The technical committee advising Columbia River fishery managers has released its forecast for the 2010 spring Chinook run. If the fish show up as projected, the forecast of 470,000 spring Chinook would be the largest return to the Columbia since 1938.

The forecasted run is up significantly from last year’s final run of 169,300 fish.

One Place I like to fish for Spring Salmon on the Columbia River is between the I5 Bridge, And 205 Bridge.

There are a few ways to fish for Spring salmon, Like trolling hearing or spinners. I had my best luck trolling down river, I use about 6 oz sinker, I like to keep it right on the bottom.

I start my troll on the Washington side of the Columbia River and work my way down river.

One other way I like to fish for Spring Salmon is to anchor up, you have to have a good curruen to do this.

I will use jet diver and Quickfish.

This is great way to fish when it cold out because Marvin’s guide Service has a top and heater!

White sturgeon spawn many times in their lives. As they age, the females spawn less often, but produce more eggs in each spawning. In the late spring or early summer, they congregate in areas of rivers with a heavy current, gravel bottom, and a water temperature of 58 °F to 66 °F (14 °C to 19 °C). The fish broadcast spawn in these areas, with males releasing sperm as the outnumbered females release anywhere from 100,000 to a million eggs. The fertilized eggs then sink and adhere to the gravel at the bottom. The eggs are brown in color and will hatch in about a week, depending on water temperature. Female white sturgeon do not spawn every year.

Upon hatching, the larvae are around 0.5 in. (1.3 cm) long, with a tadpole-like appearance. They drift downstream with the current until they reach a suitable habitat. When the rearing habitat is reached, the larvae typically take around 25 days for the yolk sac to be absorbed. About a month after hatching, the sturgeon will have a full set of fins, rays, and scutes. As small juveniles, they feed on insects, small fish, and small crustaceans. Maturity is reached between 5 and 11 years, depending on the gender of the fish and the temperature of the water.

White Sturgeon can live to be over 100 years old. The rate of growth is dependent on water temperature. Typically, they reach six feet long around 25 years of age, showing that these fish do not grow as quickly as many other fish. White Sturgeon are anadromous meaning they spawn in fresh water and migrate to salt water to mature. Sturgeon may migrate in and out of salt water many times in their lives. However, since the building of many dams along the Columbia and Snake rivers, the populations above the dams have become landlocked.

Unexpected social behavior has been observed in white sturgeon of the lower Columbia River. Up to 60,000 sturgeon massed in a dense “sturgeon ball” at the base of the Bonneville Dam in early 2008. Scientists are not sure what the reason for the behavior was.

There were record runs of steelhead over the dam this summer, so that should be great fishing!

The steelhead we are fishing in November are summer steelhead.

I like to troll plugs for these fish, I fish about 4 miles up the river and start my troll.

Steelhead are between 5 and 15 pounds, remember you can only keep the fin clip steelhead.

It is cold on the river that time of year so if you have a top, and the wind is knot blowing to hard it helps.

Marvin’s Fishing Guide Service has a top and a heater so fishing for steelhead is comfortable.

check back in November and I will have reports on steelhead fishing on the jon day river.
