I am looking forward to great salmon fishing on the Willamette River. Let me tell you last year we had plenty of action, and expecting it to be good this year also, WOW!!!!

anchor or troll? I will be doing both, for me it all depends on the weather and the speed of the river. If I troll I only troll down river with 6 to 10 oz of lead, I like to troll hearing, I also will do some back trolling in faster water with a jet diver around the Oregon City area.

If we have lot of current I will anchor my boat. I like to use jet divers, let the line out about 50 or 60 feet behind the boat, put the rod in the holder, and then go sit under the top with a heater. When that spring salmon hits the diver, wow your fishing pole is doubled over and the fight is on!

Marvin’s Guide Service has some prime dates open so call now because you wont want to miss out on this action.

Here is the spring Salmon season for the Columbia River set by Oregon, and Washington fish and game.

Fishing from a boat will be allowed seven days a week from March 1 through April 4 from Buoy 10 upstream to Rooster Rock. Fishing from the bank will be allowed during the same time from Buoy 10 upstream to Bonneville Dam. This fishery will be well managed to the available guideline of 7,750 upriver spring Chinook Salmon and could be shortened or extended depending on catch results.

The daily bag limit is two adipose fin-clipped adult salmon or steelhead in combination, of which no more than one may be a Chinook salmon. The rules also allow retention of up to five adipose fin-clipped jack salmon per day.

Columbia River from Bonneville Dam to the Oregon/Washington border

This area is open to retention of adipose fin-clipped steelhead through March 15 under permanent rules, as outlined in the 2011 Oregon Sport Fishing Regulations.

Effective March 16, this area will be open to retention of adipose fin-clipped steelhead and adipose fin-clipped Chinook salmon through April 24. This fishery will be well managed to the available guideline of 1,050 upriver spring Chinook salmon and could be shortened or extended depending on results.

The daily bag limit is two adipose fin-clipped adult salmon or steelhead in combination, and up to five adipose fin-clipped jack salmon per day.

Angling for salmon and steelhead from a boat between Bonneville Dam and the Tower Island power lines, approximately six miles down stream from The Dalles Dam, is prohibited. Bank angling is allowed in this area.

I would still recommend checking with fish and game before you go out, just to be sure the season is open.

Marvin’s Guide Service has some open days so call now and lets go catch some Salmon..

With Columbia River Spring salmon coming up soon here is a few tips on tying a good knot when Fishing.

Before you pull the knot tight wet the line, this will help to lubricate the line, and also help with abrasion and it will make the line easier to pull the line together

Make sure the knot is good and tight by pulling hard on the line, a lose knot could come unraveled when fighting that big Salmon or Sturgeon!

Be careful when you trim the knot, make sure you don’t nick the line. After you trim it pull hard on the line again just to make sure it still is nice and tight.

Check your knots often look for abrasion, or lose knots. If have any doubt at all in the line or knot cut it off and start over.

Now get out on the Columbia River and catch some Salmon.

Boat captains who have had a Person fall overboard say it is much harder to make a rescue then they had thought.

Here are a few general rules I would do to recover somebody in the water.

First stay calm.

Second, throw a lifesaving device alongside them, Not at them.

Keep the victim in sight, never take your eyes off them. If it is dark shine a light on them.

When you get close enough hand them a short line a paddle anything they can grab, and stop the motor. Then lead them around to the stern of the boat.

Help the Person aboard. If you must get in the water to help them into the boat you should put on a life jacket, and tie a line to yourself and the boat.

Make sure the person stays warm and dry as possible.
Do not give the victim hot drinks or alcohol if you think the may be suffering from hypothermia.
seek medical help at once.

Everybody Please be safe out there!

Here are my top 3 places for Spring Salmon on the Columbia river in the Portland Oregon area.

One of the first places I like to fish for Spring salmon is on the Columbia River, trolling between the 205 bridge and the I 5 Bridge. This area has become very popular the last few years. So if you plan on fishing here, you better get your boat in the river Early in the morning.

I also like to fish for Spring Salmon in the Troutdale area, I launch my boat at Chinook landing.
When I am fishing here I like to anchor. I use a spinner here.

My Favorite place to fish for Spring Salmon on the Columbia river is up by the Dam, everybody knows this area called the Shad rack. This area on the Columbia River gets very very busy, so you might have to Anchor you boat at night. Hopefully Oregon and Washington will keep the River open long enough to fish at the shad rack.

Don’t forget Oregon and Washington are saying this should be the best run of spring salmon on the Columbia River since 1938.

Call Marvin’s Guide Service for best dates dont for get to see my salmon page. http://www.fastactionfishing.com/salmon/
