Columbia River Sturgeon

For me it is the battle the fish puts up when you get that hook up. That is why Sturgeon Fishing on the Columbia River just might be one of my favorite fish to catch!

Columbia River Sturgeon may reach 13 feet and 500 pounds and bigger. Just imagine being on the water and getting a bite, you set the hook and the battle is on. Line is Peeling off the reel, this giant Sturgeon jumps, all 8 or so feet of the fish is out of the water, amazing!

When fishing on the Columbia River this dream can come true! You can not keep sturgeon this big but you may catch and release them. to keep a Sturgeon they must be between 38 and 54 inch.

Sturgeon is without a doubt my favorite fish to eat!

Squid was the bait they were biting. I did here of some fish caught on fresh smelt!
I was fishing on the Channel were it meets the Columbia river. One thing I saw which I did not like at all, was the abundance of sea lions.

Now a little story that happened to us on the Chanel while we were Sturgeon fishing, we had a little Sturgeon on, and all of the sudden the fish got big and I mean big, then it came off the hook, well that’s what we thought anyway. When we landed the Sturgeon, the tail of the fish was just hanging there, so you know what that meant, a Sea lion hit the fish.

Not cool!! When is Oregon and Washington going to do something about the sea lions in the river? They are called sea lions, Not river Lions!!

Hey we even got a shad so that was great fo sturgeon fishing. on July 11 after I got done with steelhead fishing I had some people that wanted to go Sturgeon fishing in the afternoon.
So I put that fres shad on we caught and it was not long and the fight was on.
It was a 8 feet long.

Day 2 for steelhed started out to be good, we onley fished for a wile and then we went for Sturgeon again.
It was a great day for sturgeon on the Columbia river.

There are about a 1000 salmon a day going over the dam.
this is a good time to do a half day salmon and a half day of sturgeon fishing.

We got enough shad for bait and headed down the river.
I started fishing in about 25 feet of water. We caught 3 or 4 small sturgeon and then we finally landed a keeper of 43 inches.

It was not real big but it was a nice and fat sturgeon.

Today overall was kinda of a slow day but i will be back on the river tomorrow and will report back on how we do.
