We fish the lower John Day River, in the thick of it all. We launch our boat 4 miles east of Rufus Oregon. Don’t worry about the cold, Marvin’s Guide Service has a covered and heated boat for your comfort – and you’ll want the heat this time of year.

We fish a few different ways around the John Day. One way is to troll Wiggle Warts. I like to use bright colors when tolling warts. Another great way to fish Steelhead on the John Day is with a bobber and eggs, or even sand shrimp.

Here is a Little information about the river. The John Day River is a tributary of the Columbia River. It is approximately 281 miles long, making it the third longest free-flowing river in the contiguous United States. There is extensive use of its waters for irrigation. John Day’s free-flowing course furnishes habitat for diverse species, including wild steelhead runs.

Besides Great fishing, you’ll have beautiful scenery to look at all day long.

During this time of year on the Willamette River, I try and scout out some new areas to fish for sturgeon. This way, when the season opens up some time after the first of year, I’ll be ready and know were the Sturgeon are hiding!

So today the spot I fished sturgeon produced very well. We fished 4 hours and had 3 keeper size Sturgeon to the boat and we let go over 20 smaller fish also.

Not much current on the River so you will need to use your trolling motor to help keep your boat tight on the anchor.

I know one thing for sure when the Willamette River opens for sturgeon it is going to be awesome fishing. I guarantee you one more thing when Oregon Fish and Game do open the Willamette River for Sturgeon fishing it won’t likely stay open long.

Well, How about fishing in Portland Oregon with Marvin’s Guide Service because we have a covered and heated boat, an we will do some winter Sturgeon fishing!

In November and December we will be Sturgeon fishing on the Columbia River around the mouth of the Willamette River; this always provides some great fishing action.

January we will be fishing on the Colombia River above Bonneville Dam, around Cascade Locks, Oregon. This fishery is usually allowed 7 days a week and you will find plenty of fat Sturgeon here.

Don’t forget about the Willamette River! We’re still waiting to hear from ODFW on the opening day, it might be as early as January 1st, or later in February. I can tell you this: when the Willamette opens it is going to be some Wild Sturgeon fishing, and, as always, the Willamette River won’t stay open for Sturgeon fishing very long.

If you would like to get on the list to fish the Willamette River when it opens please call now and I will get you on the list. Days go fast for Willamette River Sturgeon fishing. On the Willamette you are only allowed to keep Sturgeon 3 day’s a week when it opens; Thursday-Saturday.

We set the date to hook up on September 29th. We meet up at The Fishery on the Columbia River at 6am, well before sunrise this time of year. After we talked for a bit, we headed down to the river. Man, let me tell you, we were really up for a challenge. The east wind was blowing around 30 mph making conditions tough – and most resident fishermen can tell you, east wind usually turns the bite off.

I had Bethy Rossos in my boat, a producer and one camera man. My friend Mark, who is also a guide, was helping out in his boat with the rest of the camera crew. His job was to follow us around and try to get the best shots for the camera guys. I take my hat off to Mark, he did a great job keeping his boat on the spot, especially with that wind. Thanks, Mark.

We got our first line out in the water, and, as I was getting the 2nd rod ready, BAM! The first rod is going off and we get a fish on! That line was not in the water two minutes! I know I should almost be used to it, that first-line-bite has been good to me this year. You will have to watch the show to see how big the Sturgeon was, but if you’ve been out with me recently, I’d bet you could make a good guess.

The day ended up with four big Sturgeon, so it was a great day of Sturgeon fishing, even with the east wind blowing very hard. I will tell you this, Bethy Rossos is one tough woman, and I was lucky to get to meet a person like her. I look forward to fishing with her again.

Also, because of the saltwater in estuary, Tillamook Bay holds some of Oregon’s best Crab fishing around. Can’t get much better then that, Pots full of Crab, and King Salmon on the line.

October is generally regarded to be the time to spend in Tillamook Bay for King Salmon fishing. Reports are coming in a little bit early this year with great Salmon fishing in the bay, and pots full of crab. Fishing and crabbing in Tillamook is just going to be better in October.

So I headed down river from the fishery about 3 miles or so, I got my boat all lined up in one of my favorite spots to fish, we were in 73 feet of water, I tied a shad on the first rod and set it in the rod holder, did the same with the 2nd rod, and as I was baiting up my rod the first rod got a strike, and fish on, don’t think we had are lines in the water 5 minuet, then about 30 minuets later we had a 9 foot Sturgeon up to the boat.

After a few high fives we got are line back out, and I would say in around 10 minuets we had another Sturgeon on, this one was about 7 foot, landed and let go.

20 minuets later we had fish number 3 on about 8 foot, Duane and Denny are getting tired this fish are tough.

Then things kind of slowed we got about 10 or so Small Sturgeon, then all the sudden Duane sets the hook on one of the rod, line was just screaming off the real so the battle was on Duane fought this fish he was not going to give up, for a hour an a half, when we finely landed this huge Sturgeon well over 9 foot and 500 pounds.

Denny and Duane said they were tired and had a blast catching Sturgeon, and decided to call it a early day.
I hope tomorrow will be as good Salmon fishing for Duane and Denny as we will be hooking up at the boat ramp at 6:15 tomorrow morning.

One of the fist places I will be Salmon fishing is down by the I 205 bridge on the Columbia River. You can fish a few different ways here one way I like to fish is trolling with a jet diver and an Alvin wobbler. Also sitting on the hook works great with a Alvin when the water is moving enough.

Next up, mid-September will be on the Columbia River just below Bonneville Dam. I will be back trolling with a jet diver and a quick fish. You don’t want to miss out on September salmon fishing on the Columbia River, this is a great time to put some fresh Salmon in you freezer.

After September 10th you will be allowed to keep to Chinook Salmon on the Columbia river.
