If the answer is yes then like Marvin’s Guide Service on facebook now and help spread the word! If we have at least 1000 likes by the end of 2011 we will have a drawing for a spring salmon fishing trip for you and a guest.

Shad are starting to show up in the Columbia and Willamette River. Is summer here?

I am going to tell you how Marvin’s Guide Service fishes for shad, and also tell you a few places we fish for shad.
First of all shad fishing is no big secret, it is a great fishery for kids as there is lots of action and they are a great fight. I like to call shad the poor mans steelhead because they fight almost as good as a Steelhead.

All you need is a Dick Nite spoon, a spreader and a sinker. I use about a 24 inch leader on the spoon as well as on the sinker. I just back bounce it out away from the boat a little ways and it usually wont be long and, fish on.

Oregon City on the Willamette River is a very good spot to fish shad I would anchor up in around 10 to 20 feet of water be very careful, as the Willamette River is moving pretty fast this time of year.

Columbia River, you can fish just below or above the mouth of the Sand River around the Troutdale area. Now probably the most popular spot on the Columbia river to fish for shad is in the Columbia River Gorge at what we call the Shad Rack witch is just up from Beacon Rock.

Shad is a great bait for Sturgeon fishing Call Marvin’s Guide Service today and get your shad and Sturgeon fishing trip booked in June.

Shad fishing is great for kids.

With Summer finally coming, there is plenty of fish to be caught on the Columbia River. Here are a few of my favorites:

June Shad – the Columbia River gets a ton of shad in June, following the end of the Spring Chinook salmon migration. This is a great fishery for kids because there is always a lot of consistent action. I also like to use shad for Sturgeon bait. Shad fishing with light tackle always ensures a good time.

Summer Dinos – If you are after a monster fish over 8 feet and 400 pounds or more, well, then, let go do some Sturgeon fishing. You will catch these Sturgeon on the Columbia River all the way into September, with fishing just 30 minuets from down town Portland Oregon.

Summer Steelhead – fishing on the Columbia river is great, we also fish Steelhead just 30 minuets from down town Portland Oregon.

August Salmon – Now you should be really excited. Astoria, Oregon, Buoy 10 salmon fishing at the mouth of the Columbia River just might be some of the best salmon fishing Oregon and Washington have to offer. King salmon can get up to 50 pounds. And believe me when I say there is good salmon action, I mean good. Astoria is about a 2 hour drive from Portland, Oregon.

Call Marvin’s Guide Service today and get your day’s booked.

Columbia River opens back up for Spring Salmon fishing tomorrow April 8th, it will be open lintel April 15th.

With the Columbia River running fast, I would suggest anchoring instead of trolling.

Here is a look at the rules again.

COLUMBIA RIVER MAIN-STEM, from Buoy 10 up River to Rooster Rock State Park
is Open for retention of adipose fin-clipped Chinook salmon and adipose fin-clipped steelhead 7 days per week from April 8 through April 15.

Daily bag limit is 2 adult Chinook salmon/steelhead in combination, of which only 1 may be an adult Chinook salmon.
Up to 5 adipose fin-clipped jacks may be retained in addition to adult fish.
The upstream boundary of this area is defined as “A true north/south line from Rooster Rock on the Oregon shore across the river to the Washington shore”.

COLUMBIA RIVER MAIN-STEM, Rooster Rock State Park to Bonneville Dam
Open for BANK ANGLING ONLY. Retention of adipose fin-clipped Chinook Salmon and adipose fin-clipped steelhead allowed 7 days per week from April 8 through April 15.
Daily bag limit is 2 adult salmon/steelhead in combination, of which only 1 may be an adult Chinook.

Good luck out there, and be extra careful with the fast water.

How I store monofilament line

I store my line either still in the package spool or on the reel. Always in a cool dark dry place. I try to avoid storing my line were it can be exposed to the sun.

When you put monofilament line onto a reel, get the line as tight as possible. This will help to keep the line from digging in to the rest of the spool when have you that big fish on and it is fighting hard.

I like to keep my reels full of line. When a reel gets low on line they do not cast or retrieve as well compared to a full reel. Be careful not to overfill the reel.

I also think it is a good idea to wet your line before fishing. If you are in a boat you might want to let 50 or so yards of line out while you are going slow. Then reel it in as tight as you can.

Columbia River Sturgeon fishing On June 6 2010.

On June 6th, I got to the boat ramp at 6 a.m. Man was it raining hard and I did not have my top on the boat.
Pat, Mike, Tom, and I left the dock and headed out on the river. I got the anchor set and threw the first line in the water. The Columbia River is high and fast, I was using 32 oz to stay on the bottom.

After fishing about 30 minutes or so we got our first bite, it was about a 30 inch sturgeon.
It really didnt matter the size, because you can’t keep Sturgeon on Sunday.

We caught a few more small ones, then Pat got a sturgeon that was about 50 inches, but remember it is Sunday so we let that 50 inch Sturgeon go as well.

Mike got a bite, he set the hook and the Sturgeon jumpedit was about 10 foot long, now the fight was on!
I don’t think it could of rained any harder as we battled this monster from the Columbia River. After an hour,we finally got this monster Sturgeon to the boat we took the hook out and let her go back in to the Columbia River.

Then the run really started. We threw our lines back in the water, 15 minutes later we had a bite, it jumped this time it was only about 7 foot or so. The fight was on.

I Dont think the rain ever stopped that day. but it still was a great day on the Columbia river,
2 monster Sturgeon 1 that would of been a keeper on a open day, and about 10 or 12 small Sturgeon.

I will post some picture soon as I recieve them.

Of course I said yes.

The plan was to fish in Astoria Oregon on the Columbia River for Sturgeon then Andy and Donetta were going to go tours some homes in Seaside Oregon. Andy and Donetta showed up at the East Basin boat ramp in Astoria Oregon about 8:45 am, We stared to load the boat with the camera and all the gear. Mike Andy’s photographer brought this cool new water proof camera. He strapped it to the top of the boat.

Away we went! Mike is filming everything, I head down the Columbia River a few miles and set my anchor down on the bottom of the river. I put the lines it the water. man it was a wet day out but we still were fishing.

Sorry to say it was a very slow day on the river. We did knot catch a Sturgeon.

But I did catch a nice 51 inch Sturgeon the day before, so I gave that fish to Andy and the crew.

With that said it still was a blast to have Andy on my boat again. Watch for the video to air in June.

I wil have a link on my web site to the video after it airs in June so check back.

I give a special thanks to fox 12 Good Day Oregon.
