May is also a great time to do Salmon fishing on the lower Willamette River. You could even do a half day of Salmon fishing on the Willamette then do the second half of the day Sturgeon fishing on the Columbia River.

Around the end of May we will Start seeing some Shad on the Willamette River, You know what that means? Big Sturgeon on the Columbia River.

So no matter what you want to fish for Salmon,Sturgeon,or Shad or maybe a little Salmon fishing then a little Sturgeon fishing May and June is a great time to do that.

With the Columbia River running fast, I would suggest anchoring instead of trolling.

Here is a look at the rules again.

COLUMBIA RIVER MAIN-STEM, from Buoy 10 up River to Rooster Rock State Park
is Open for retention of adipose fin-clipped Chinook salmon and adipose fin-clipped steelhead 7 days per week from April 8 through April 15.

Daily bag limit is 2 adult Chinook salmon/steelhead in combination, of which only 1 may be an adult Chinook salmon.
Up to 5 adipose fin-clipped jacks may be retained in addition to adult fish.
The upstream boundary of this area is defined as “A true north/south line from Rooster Rock on the Oregon shore across the river to the Washington shore”.

COLUMBIA RIVER MAIN-STEM, Rooster Rock State Park to Bonneville Dam
Open for BANK ANGLING ONLY. Retention of adipose fin-clipped Chinook Salmon and adipose fin-clipped steelhead allowed 7 days per week from April 8 through April 15.
Daily bag limit is 2 adult salmon/steelhead in combination, of which only 1 may be an adult Chinook.

Now were to fish? anchor or troll? I will be doing both, for me it all depends on the weather and the speed of the river. If I troll I only troll down river with 6 t0 10 oz of lead, I like to troll hearring, I want my sinker to hit the bottom every few seconds, When you get a strike there is no doubt the fish is there.

If we have lot of current I will anchor my boat. I like to use jet divers, let the line out about 50 or 60 feet behind the boat, put the rod in the holder,and then go sit under the top with a heater. When that spring salmon hits the diver, wow your fishing pole is doubled over and the fight is on!

With all the rain we have had, the river’s are high and there is a lot of stuff floating in the water.

I have 350 feet of rope with a Columbia River Anchor, at the end of the rope I have an EZ Marine buoy anchor pulley system.

I start around 200 feet or so from were I want my boat to sit, I put the boat in reverse for a second just to make sure we are going backwards, then I let the anchor drop, I put the boat in forward, to slow down dont want to go back real fast, just keep the rope out in front of the boat.

When I get about 20 feet from were I want my boat, I let go of the buoy. I like the buoy to be around 15 feet or so from the bow of my boat, Now tie the rope off and you are ready.

During the day always keep a good eye on the river to make sure there are no tress or logs drifting towards your boat.

My rods are the ugly stick tiger rods, I use peen 320 gti for the reel with 80# test tuf line.

First thing I do is slide a slider up the main line, then I put 2 or 3 beads on, this just gives you a little space between you sinker and the swivel. Then I tie a barrel swivel to the main line, I like to use a 250# test swivel.

Then for my leader to the hook is 130# Dacron about 3 feet or so, Now depending on the bait I use, that will determine the size hook I use, If I am fishing with a big bait like a whole Shad then I use a size 10 hook, for smelt or squid I like a 5 or 6. all hooks have to be barbless.

You can also fish on the Washington side of the Columbia River just above the Washougal River, Again in 12 to 20 feet of water.

My favorot spot on the Columbia River is up by the Dam ,where the locals call the “shad Rack” The water is is very fast,but I believe this just might be the best place on the Columbia River to fish for Shad.

I like to use light gear for shad, they range in size, from 2 pounds all the way up to 5 and even 6 pounds..
I anchor my boat in the current, and then i tie my line up with a spreader and a Tripleteaser.
Just let it out and let the current do the work.

When the Shad hits it like having a salmon or Steelhead hit, they are great fighting fish for there size, some people call them the “poor man Steelhead”.

Shad fishing is great for kids because there is plenty of action in May and June.

I don’t like to eat Shad. Some people might but not me. I use the shad for Sturgeon bait. I think shad is the best bait you could have. I also use Shad for crab bait it is great.

While I was there. Cascade Marine showed me what was wrong with the boat. I saw how much water had accumulated in the gas tank. When the tech took off the screw on water fuel separator and dumped it into a clear container.

WOW it was mostly water.
When the tech took off the top of the carburetor and looked inside. Oh my a half inch of salt white power accumulation in the bottom and he showed me the plugged idle jets. No other shop has treated me this way.

I like this shop. They have gone and will go the extra mile as they know I am using the boat to make my living. And time off the water is bad. My boat was up and running in a hour or so..

SALEM, Ore. — The technical committee advising Columbia River fishery managers has released its forecast for the 2010 spring Chinook run. If the fish show up as projected, the forecast of 470,000 spring Chinook would be the largest return to the Columbia since 1938.

The forecasted run is up significantly from last year’s final run of 169,300 fish.

One Place I like to fish for Spring Salmon on the Columbia River is between the I5 Bridge, And 205 Bridge.

There are a few ways to fish for Spring salmon, Like trolling hearing or spinners. I had my best luck trolling down river, I use about 6 oz sinker, I like to keep it right on the bottom.

I start my troll on the Washington side of the Columbia River and work my way down river.

One other way I like to fish for Spring Salmon is to anchor up, you have to have a good curruen to do this.

I will use jet diver and Quickfish.

This is great way to fish when it cold out because Marvin’s guide Service has a top and heater!

Here is what I found out

Below the Wauna Powerlines at River Mile 40 to Buoy 10 witch is at the mouth of the Columbia, including Young’s Bay and Washington tributaries, fishing will open seven days a week for sturgeon.

Sturgeon have to be between 38 inch and 54 inch. That is fork in tail to tip of nose.

Above Wauna to Bonneville Dam, and the Willamette River up to Willamette Falls, including Multnomah Channel, Sturgeon fishing is open Thursdays, threw Saturday, with the size limit also between 38 and 54 inch.

The Columbia River above Bonneville will also opens Jan. 1 for sturgeon fishing seven days a week with a 38- to 54-inch slot limit in the Bonneville Pool, and a 43- to 54-inch slot limit in the John Day Pool.

I expect Sturgeon fishing to be great at the first of year.
