In my opinion, spring chinook salmon is the best eating fish the Columbia River has to offer and is a great perk of living in Portland, Oregon.
Many Columbia River fishing guides will generally start salmon fishing in the middle of March for spring salmon. We will be fishing the Portland area, right by PDX airport.
Walleye is a favorite to lots of fishing guides on the Columbia River. I like to fish Walleye about an hour east of Portland, Oregon, in a town called Rufus.
Fishing for walleye is a year-round fishery. As a Columbia River fishing guide, I like to target walleye on the upper Columbia Where the river is usually warmer and generally has more action.
The Columbia also has a large population of sturgeon to offer. Sturgeon can range anywhere from 2 to 10 feet long.
Sturgeon fishing is also offered year-round in the Portland area.
Sturgeon is one of Marvins favorite fish to catch. a white Sturgeon can be up to 10 feet long. I will offer catch and release Monster Sturgeon trips on the Columbia River near the Dalles Oregon. In January, there is generally a small slot limit where you may harvest sturgeon on the Columbia River.
2024 Catch and keep sturgeon on the Columbia River is currently closed. You may continue to catch and release.
When allowed to harvest sturgeon, they have size limits that are too small and too big. Make sure you check with ODFW before you fish on the Columbia River for current rules.
Columbia River also offers pan fish like bass, perch, and crappie.
