There are lot’s of places to fish for Chinook salmon on the Willamette River.
I will just talk about a few for now.The First spot I like to Salmon fish is were the Channel comes into the Willamette River. I troll in this area of the River. The water is around 15 to 20 feet deep, I like to bounce the bottom when I fish this area.

The next place on the Willamette river I like to fish for salmon is up the river a few miles to downtown Portland Oregon, the water is 60 feet deep or so in this area, so what I do here is put on a 10 or 12 oz sinker and then let my line out around 30 feet, I try different depth until I find were the fish are.

I always like to troll with hearing on the Willamette River, when I fish the Oregon city area is when I go to hardware fishing.

Get ready for a super great run of Chinook salmon this year,

On the Columbia River, reports of anglers hooking spring Chinook are now coming in almost daily. The bite is expected to pick up in the coming weeks as spring Chinook begin to return to the Columbia in increasing numbers.
A potential record return of 559,900 spring Chinook has allowed state Fish and Wildlife to provide anglers with a wide range of fishing in the Columbia River during March and April.

If the run of highly prized and tasty spring Chinook, the come back as predicted would be the largest return since at least 1938.

Last year, 222,000 spring Chinook returned to the Columbia River.

Be sure to give Marvin’s Guide Service a call, and get hooked up with a Spring Chinook Salmon.

Or maybe you just Like Steelhead fishing, well then the Columbia River gorge has some of the best steelhead fishing around, you can fish from a boat or off the bank.

There are plenty of Walleye to be found on the Columbia River, experts say the next record Walleye should come out of the lower Columbia River. I plan on catching that Walleye!

Now the Monster fish, one of Marvin’s Guide Service favorite fish on the Columbia River is the White Sturgeon.
The Columbia river holds Sturgeon in it over 12 feet long and upwards of 900 pounds.

Well the season is set For the 2010 Spring Salmon season On the Columbia River Like it or not!

Columbia River, Buoy 10 to I-5 Bridge

Fishing will be allowed seven days a week from March 1 through April 18 or until the harvest guideline is achieved.
The season will be closed on Tuesdays, March 9, 16, 23 and 30. The purpose of the Tuesday closures is to provide possible commercial fishing days. ” Gill nets!”

The daily bag limit is two adipose fin-clipped adult salmon or steelhead in combination, of which no more than one may be a Chinook. The rules also allow retention of up to five adipose fin-clipped jack salmon per day.

Above I 5 Bridge to I 205 Bridge
This area is open to retention of adipose fin-clipped Chinook salmon seven days a week from March 1-14 and three days a week Thursday through Saturday from March 18 – April 3, or until the quota is achieved.

The season is closed Tuesday, March 9. The daily bag limit is two adipose fin-clipped adult salmon or steelhead in combination, of which no more than one may be a Chinook, and up to five adipose fin-clipped jack salmon per day.

Now the bad part is no fishing from a boat allowed above the I 205 Bridge!

What the heck was fish and wild life thinging about when the did this?

Any way I still think we will have some great fishing so get your days booked now.

There are tons of ways to cook salmon, I am going to tell you my favorite way to cook it.

Some people like to have there Salmon smoked, Which is very good but I say a fresh Columbia River Spring Salmon is too good of a fish to be smoked.

I like to filet the salmon, then take it and lay it on some foil, put some butter on the meat. I like to cut up some potato and carrots and maybe a onion. Really any vegetables you like, then I put the vegetables and potatoes on and all around the meat, now take that and set it on the BBQ, cook for around 15 to 20 minutes.

Now you have fresh Columbia River Salmon, potatoes and vegetables. Serve with a salad and garlic bread and you have a great dinner.

The Spring Salmon always taste better if caught with Marvin’s Guide Service….

Sturgeon fishing on the Willamette River has been good, Squid or smelt has been a great choice of bait.

This time of year is a great time to start the day off trolling for Salmon, and the finish the day off fishing for Sturgeon.
Good luck fishing, and see you soon on the Columbia River.

Here is one way you can rig up with a jet diver for Salmon on the Columbia River.

Have your jet diver on about 18 inch line with a snap swivel hooked up to the jet diver, then on the other end of the line, I like to have a bead chain swivel. Slide the bead chain on to your line, now place 2 or 3 beads, what ever color you like. Then take a bead chain swivel and tie it to the end of your line.

Take some line I like to use 30lb test tie it to the bead chain, make this line 4 foot, now you can tie a quick fish to the end of the line or a spinner whatever you like.

The first Spring Salmon of 2010 on the Columbia River has been caught.

I do believe we are going to have a great season on the Columbia River for salmon!
Then tie a bead chain to the line, tie a piece of line to the bead chain about a 2 foot piece of line than snap a flasher to that bead chain, now I like my hooks to be 3 or 4 feet from the flasher.

You can troll with a spinner or hearing, Whatever you like. I just troll down river and make sure you are hitting the bottom, you want to bounce on and off the bottom.

Remember you can only keep hatchery salmon.
Good luck.
Fishing starts in May for the great white Sturgeon. I fish on the Columbia River below Bonneville Dam,on the dead line which is a few miles down river from the fishery.
I like to fish in about 50 feet of water, the river is moving fast this time of year so be extra careful, have plenty of rope out.

Now I like to use Shad for bait, the whole Shad. 3 to 4 pounds average. The fun part is when the sturgeon starts to bite, make sure your drag is set real lose, so when the fish starts to bite it will take about 20 to 30 yards of line before you take it out of the rod holder.
Now take the rod out of the holder and slowly tighten up the drag, then set the hook, set it hard, Fish on!

Unhook your anchor and start to drift away and the fight is on!

When you go to release the giant Sturgeon be careful not to touch the gills, just take a quick picture and let the fish go.

go check out my Sturgeon page.

One of the first places I like to fish for Spring salmon is on the Columbia River, trolling between the 205 bridge and the I 5 Bridge. This area has become very popular the last few years. So if you plan on fishing here, you better get your boat in the river Early in the morning.

I also like to fish for Spring Salmon in the Troutdale area, I launch my boat at Chinook landing.
When I am fishing here I like to anchor. I use a spinner here.

My Favorite place to fish for Spring Salmon on the Columbia river is up by the Dam, everybody knows this area called the Shad rack. This area on the Columbia River gets very very busy, so you might have to Anchor you boat at night. Hopefully Oregon and Washington will keep the River open long enough to fish at the shad rack.

Don’t forget Oregon and Washington are saying this should be the best run of spring salmon on the Columbia River since 1938.
