Well, people they say the Columbia River will close on Friday, April 13, for Spring Salmon. We will have to wait and see if Oregon and Washington fish and game departments decide to extend the season again. I wish we could decide our season like the commercial Gillneters can. I don’t agree with that at all.

But don’t worry the Willamette River is really starting to get in shape. I have already heard of some Salmon being caught in the lower Willamette River. I expect in the next few days the Willamette water level will come down and clear up in great shape for salmon fishing.

Where to Salmon fish on the Willamette River? I will be salmon fishing in the lower river from the head of the channel to the mouth of the Willamette. I like to use a flasher, don’t be afraid to use double flasher set up, and of course good green label herring. Because the Willamette River gets a large run of Spring salmon I will keep fishing the river until middle of June.

There are other great trolling areas throughout the Lower Willamette River including Downtown Portland, the Sellwood Bridge, South Waterfront and more all the way up to the Willamette Falls.
Call Marvin’s Guide Service an get hooked up.

Columbia River is a beautiful river that borders Oregon and Washington. You can find some of the best Salmon fishing and Sturgeon fishing around in the Portland, Oregon and Vancouver, Washington area.
The Columbia River will get 3 different runs of Salmon. First run is the Spring Salmon witch will start in March. We will usually fish for the Spring Salmon into the early part of June. Also in June we start the summer run of Salmon witch lots of people call HOGS. We only get a very short season to fish for salmon in June, but it is some awesome fishing. Then we have the big fall run of salmon witch starts at the mouth of the Columbia River in August and runs until early part of October. This is usually the biggest salmon run of all three, and most of these are wild fish. So if you are looking to catch a Salmon on the Columbia River and you are in the Portland, Oregon or Vancouver, Washington area you’re in luck, we can hook you up.

Columbia River also gets a huge run of Summer Steelhead I start fishing for in early July.

Now you might already know the Columbia River is known for the Sturgeon. You can catch a giant Sturgeon year around on the Columbia River.

If you want to catch a Salmon. Steelhead or a Sturgeon then call Marvin’s Guide Service and get hooked up in a covered and heated boat.

The Fist Columbia River Spring Chinook Salmon of the season 2012 has been caught by a sportsman. It was a 12 to 14 pound Chinook Salmon caught off Frenchmen’s Bar. News like this gets everyone excited for the season.

Let’s talk a little bit about how Marvin’s Guides Service rigs up for Spring Chinook Salmon on the Columbia River, and Willamette River.

I use a Lamiglas rod, with a Okuma line counter reel filled with 65 pound test Tuf Line braid. Line counters are the way to go; you always know how deep you are fishing, and that is key in salmon fishing.

I put a slider on my main line for my dropper weight, then I slip 2 or 3 beads on the line. Then I tie a bead chain to the end of the main line. Next I tie about a 2 foot leader from the bead chain to a flasher, then I take a 2 foot piece of line from the flasher to another bead chain. Then I take my mooching rig which is around 4 to 5 feet and tie it to the bead chain. I use anywhere from 8 to 12oz of lead depending on the speed of the river.

Call Marvin’s Guide Service today and lets get you hooked up!
Covered and heated boat.

The 2012 Columbia River Spring Chinook Salmon season is going to be a short season but I predict a very good season. Oregon and Washington are predicting 314,200 Chinook Salmon to return up the Columbia River, which would be the fourth-largest recorded.

Spring Chinook Salmon fishing is scheduled to go to April 6, but could go longer if enough fish are available for harvest.

Harvest guidelines adopted by the two states will allow fishing below Bonneville Dam to catch and keep up to 14,500 hatchery spring Chinook before the run forecast is updated in May.

Spring Chinook fishing is currently open to boat and bank anglers on a daily basis from Buoy 10 near the mouth of the Columbia River upstream to the Interstate 5 bridge. Under the new rules adopted, the sport fishery will expand upriver to Beacon Rock from March 1 through April 6. During that period, the sport fishery will close on three Tuesdays March 20, March 27 and April 3 to accommodate commercial gill net fisheries.

Starting March 1, fishing downriver from Bonneville Dam you may keep one hatchery adult spring Chinook as part of the daily catch limit. Above the dam, you may keep two marked adult spring Chinook salmon per day effective March 16.

Well people Oregon fish and wildlife set the Sturgeon season for the Willamette River today.
I don’t like it, but what can I do? We only get 4 days of Sturgeon fishing on the Willamette river.

Sturgeon retention season on the Lower Willamette River (including Multnomah Channel and the Gilbert River) will be open Feb. 17-18 and Feb. 24-25 2012

The shortened harvest season is in response to a continued decline in the abundance of legal-sized fish in both the Willamette and Columbia rivers. Last week, the directors of Oregon and Washington departments of fish and wildlife agreed on a reduction in the harvest rate for both rivers from 22.5 percent to 16 percent for 2012. That’s a 38 percent reduction in the number of fish that can be harvested from the Willamette, and a 2012 harvest guideline between 1,768 and 2,022 fish.

I do expect some great Sturgeon fishing, I also expect huge crowds of people out there. the daily bag limit is one fish with a fork length between 38 and 54 inches!

Here is a quick Sturgeon fishing report for the Bonneville pool. fishing was fair to good this weekend; there were more Sturgeon caught closer to Hood River. I only heard of a few Sturgeon caught down by the Cascade Locks area. While I did put my boat in at Cascade locks, I would head up the Columbia River about 8 or 10 miles. Most Sturgeon were caught in deep water, about 80 feet or better. Water temperatures were about 40 degrees.

I suggest if you go fish the Bonneville Pool that you use as light of fishing rod as possible because the Sturgeon are biting very soft, and you don’t want to miss a bite. Most salmon rods will suit this light winter bite perfectly.

I don’t see the season lasting long, so if your thinking about going, quit thinking and go. You are allowed to keep Sturgeon 7 day’s a week for now. But I would check with fish and game before you head out, as they are talking about making it a 3 day fishery. ODFW and WDFW will decide on all sturgeon regulations for the year in just a couple weeks.

Crazy! Here it is almost Christmas and we’re talking about Spring Chinook salmon fishing in Oregon. That’s because Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife is predicting a run of 83,400 Chinook Salmon on the Willamette River this Spring. That number is slightly higher than last year’s return of 80,254. With Chinook salmon numbers like that they should be high enough for a seven-day-a-week fishery and a two fish limit when the fishing season in opens in January.

We will have to wait until January to know for sure the exact day’s we can fish salmon.

I know I’m very excited for the Spring fishery on the Willamette because the spring of 2011 was very good and now, to say there will be more spring salmon on the Willamette in 2012, has gotten everybody excited.

Marvin’s Guide Service will be Spring salmon fishing on the lower Willamette River from the head of the Multnomah Channel on down to the mouth of the Willamette River.

Marvin’s Guide Service has a nice top and a heater where you will be warm and dry while you fish in the spring. Call Marvin today a get your Spring Chinook salmon fishing trip for 2012 in the books.

Sturgeon fishing above Bonneville Dam will open January 1, 2012. Sturgeon retention is allowed 7 day’s a week until the quota of Sturgeon are caught.
If you are looking to put some fresh Sturgeon in your freezer you want to go in January or early February. I don’t expect Sturgeon fishing above Bonneville Dam to stay open very long. Sturgeon must be between 38 and 54 inches to be able to keep them. You are allowed to keep one Sturgeon a day, but you may continue to catch and release after you have tagged your Sturgeon.

Marvin’s Guide service will be fishing from the Cascade Locks, Oregon area. Cascade Locks is about 7 miles east of the Bonneville Dam.

I know your thinking this is to cold to go fishing, but don’t worry, we have a covered and heated boat so you will be fishing in comfort.

Call Marvin’s Guide Service today and let’s get you hooked up on some great winter Sturgeon fishing in the Columbia River Gorge.

If you’re looking for Steelhead, there’s nothing better than the John Day River in November. Most of these fish are Summer hold-overs seeking cool water before heading off to Idaho. These Steelhead fight hard, run and jump and charge the boat. If you let the the line get slack, they run in the opposite direction and jump and run hard. This is a blast on light tackle.

We fish the lower John Day River, in the thick of it all. We launch our boat 4 miles east of Rufus Oregon. Don’t worry about the cold, Marvin’s Guide Service has a covered and heated boat for your comfort – and you’ll want the heat this time of year.

We fish a few different ways around the John Day. One way is to troll Wiggle Warts. I like to use bright colors when tolling warts. Another great way to fish Steelhead on the John Day is with a bobber and eggs, or even sand shrimp.

Here is a Little information about the river. The John Day River is a tributary of the Columbia River. It is approximately 281 miles long, making it the third longest free-flowing river in the contiguous United States. There is extensive use of its waters for irrigation. John Day’s free-flowing course furnishes habitat for diverse species, including wild steelhead runs.

Besides Great fishing, you’ll have beautiful scenery to look at all day long.
Steelhead fishing on the lower John Day River goes into the end of November.
