Columbia River Big numbers of Steelhead continue to go over Bonneville Dam with over double the return rate this year than last.

Peak passage last year took place in mid-August but now is the time to go as water temperatures will rise, putting catch rates on the drop.
Sturgeon fishing in the Columbia River Gorge has been fair to good. with Shad being the best bait.
Sturgeon fishing in the Columbia River Gorge will close soon the last day you can keep a Sturgeon in the Gorge is the last Saturday of July.

Columbia River Steelhead fishing is starting to heat up in the Gorge. I have been fishing at that upper end of the Shad rack in about 12 feet of water. The Columbia River is very fast now, so use caution when you anchor here.

How to rig up for summer Steelhead on the Columbia River.

I like to use a slider or my lead line, then put 2 or 3 beads, then tie on a bead chain swivel.
I make my lead line 20 inches, then of of my bead chain I tie a 25 inch leader to it with a spinner on the end.
I like to use a number 5 blade.

Back bounce your line out 6 to 8 oz of lead has been good. When the Steelhead hits you know it, the pole will double over to the water.
Good luck to all you, and be careful.

Columbia River Sturgeon fishing On June 6 2010.

On June 6th, I got to the boat ramp at 6 a.m. Man was it raining hard and I did not have my top on the boat.
Pat, Mike, Tom, and I left the dock and headed out on the river. I got the anchor set and threw the first line in the water. The Columbia River is high and fast, I was using 32 oz to stay on the bottom.

After fishing about 30 minutes or so we got our first bite, it was about a 30 inch sturgeon.
It really didnt matter the size, because you can’t keep Sturgeon on Sunday.

We caught a few more small ones, then Pat got a sturgeon that was about 50 inches, but remember it is Sunday so we let that 50 inch Sturgeon go as well.

Mike got a bite, he set the hook and the Sturgeon jumpedit was about 10 foot long, now the fight was on!
I don’t think it could of rained any harder as we battled this monster from the Columbia River. After an hour,we finally got this monster Sturgeon to the boat we took the hook out and let her go back in to the Columbia River.

Then the run really started. We threw our lines back in the water, 15 minutes later we had a bite, it jumped this time it was only about 7 foot or so. The fight was on.

I Dont think the rain ever stopped that day. but it still was a great day on the Columbia river,
2 monster Sturgeon 1 that would of been a keeper on a open day, and about 10 or 12 small Sturgeon.

I will post some picture soon as I recieve them.

Of course I said yes.

The plan was to fish in Astoria Oregon on the Columbia River for Sturgeon then Andy and Donetta were going to go tours some homes in Seaside Oregon. Andy and Donetta showed up at the East Basin boat ramp in Astoria Oregon about 8:45 am, We stared to load the boat with the camera and all the gear. Mike Andy’s photographer brought this cool new water proof camera. He strapped it to the top of the boat.

Away we went! Mike is filming everything, I head down the Columbia River a few miles and set my anchor down on the bottom of the river. I put the lines it the water. man it was a wet day out but we still were fishing.

Sorry to say it was a very slow day on the river. We did knot catch a Sturgeon.

But I did catch a nice 51 inch Sturgeon the day before, so I gave that fish to Andy and the crew.

With that said it still was a blast to have Andy on my boat again. Watch for the video to air in June.

I wil have a link on my web site to the video after it airs in June so check back.

I give a special thanks to fox 12 Good Day Oregon.

Columbia River Sturgeon fishing, 3 of us left the Chinook Landing which is in Troutdale, Oregon at 6:15 am.
I headed up the Columbia River. What a nice morning on the river, no wind. I reached the Roster Rock area, and dropped my anchor. I looked around and wow, I was the only boat on the Columbia River.

It was not very long and we had our first bite, just a little 30 inch Sturgeon. Really did not matter anyways, you can not keep Sturgeon on Monday’s. Only on Thursday, Friday, and Saturdays.

We caught 4 or 5 more small ones, then all the sudden we had a big Sturgeon on the line. We played this Sturgeon for about 25 minutes or so when we finally got it to the boat. it was about 6 feet long 150 pounds or so.The day went on we caught some more small Sturgeon and some that would of been keeper fish if it had been a open day to keep Sturgeon.

Now the Funny part, Alicia one of my guest in the boat had a nice Sturgeon on, we get it to the boat and I would say this Sturgeon is about 48 inch Sturgeon, nice fish! So I reach down in the water grab the fish by the tail and take the hook out of the mouth, Alicia reaches over to hold the Sturgeon so she can have a picture of it before we let it go, just as she reached for it the fish kicked its tail slapping me in the face! I dropped the fish, it fell in the water. no picture for ALicia, but let me tell you I had a sore nose, that fish slaped me so hard. Guess it safe to say the Sturgeon won the battle that day!!

I also like to fish in the Troutdale area, under the power lines. You also have the deep water off the cliffs at Roster Rock. or go up the River to the flats around Multnomah Falls area.
Remember the new deadline is just around the falls.

May Is the time to start watching for shad to show up on the Willamette River, Shad is great bait for Sturgeon on the Columbia River. If you don’t have any Shad I would use squid for bait.

On the Columbia River, reports of anglers hooking spring Chinook are now coming in almost daily. The bite is expected to pick up in the coming weeks as spring Chinook begin to return to the Columbia in increasing numbers.
A potential record return of 559,900 spring Chinook has allowed state Fish and Wildlife to provide anglers with a wide range of fishing in the Columbia River during March and April.

If the run of highly prized and tasty spring Chinook, the come back as predicted would be the largest return since at least 1938.

Last year, 222,000 spring Chinook returned to the Columbia River.

It just might be a great season on the Columbia River for Spring Salmon.

We will find out next week what days we can fish, I can only hope that fish and game won’t screw us over this year. So if you want your shot at salmon fishing, you better call soon.

Sturgeon fishing on the Willamette River has been good, Squid or smelt has been a great choice of bait.

This time of year is a great time to start the day off trolling for Salmon, and the finish the day off fishing for Sturgeon.
Good luck fishing, and see you soon on the Columbia River.
