Let’s talk a little bit about how Marvin’s Guides Service rigs up for Spring Chinook Salmon on the Columbia River, and Willamette River.

I use a Lamiglas rod, with a Okuma line counter reel filled with 65 pound test Tuf Line braid. Line counters are the way to go; you always know how deep you are fishing, and that is key in salmon fishing.

I put a slider on my main line for my dropper weight, then I slip 2 or 3 beads on the line. Then I tie a bead chain to the end of the main line. Next I tie about a 2 foot leader from the bead chain to a flasher, then I take a 2 foot piece of line from the flasher to another bead chain. Then I take my mooching rig which is around 4 to 5 feet and tie it to the bead chain. I use anywhere from 8 to 12oz of lead depending on the speed of the river.

Spring Chinook Salmon fishing is scheduled to go to April 6, but could go longer if enough fish are available for harvest.

Harvest guidelines adopted by the two states will allow fishing below Bonneville Dam to catch and keep up to 14,500 hatchery spring Chinook before the run forecast is updated in May.

Spring Chinook fishing is currently open to boat and bank anglers on a daily basis from Buoy 10 near the mouth of the Columbia River upstream to the Interstate 5 bridge. Under the new rules adopted, the sport fishery will expand upriver to Beacon Rock from March 1 through April 6. During that period, the sport fishery will close on three Tuesdays March 20, March 27 and April 3 to accommodate commercial gill net fisheries.

Starting March 1, fishing downriver from Bonneville Dam you may keep one hatchery adult spring Chinook as part of the daily catch limit. Above the dam, you may keep two marked adult spring Chinook salmon per day effective March 16.

Sturgeon retention season on the Lower Willamette River (including Multnomah Channel and the Gilbert River) will be open Feb. 17-18 and Feb. 24-25 2012

The shortened harvest season is in response to a continued decline in the abundance of legal-sized fish in both the Willamette and Columbia rivers. Last week, the directors of Oregon and Washington departments of fish and wildlife agreed on a reduction in the harvest rate for both rivers from 22.5 percent to 16 percent for 2012. That’s a 38 percent reduction in the number of fish that can be harvested from the Willamette, and a 2012 harvest guideline between 1,768 and 2,022 fish.

I do expect some great Sturgeon fishing, I also expect huge crowds of people out there. the daily bag limit is one fish with a fork length between 38 and 54 inches!

I suggest if you go fish the Bonneville Pool that you use as light of fishing rod as possible because the Sturgeon are biting very soft, and you don’t want to miss a bite. Most salmon rods will suit this light winter bite perfectly.

I don’t see the season lasting long, so if your thinking about going, quit thinking and go. You are allowed to keep Sturgeon 7 day’s a week for now. But I would check with fish and game before you head out, as they are talking about making it a 3 day fishery. ODFW and WDFW will decide on all sturgeon regulations for the year in just a couple weeks.

I know I’m very excited for the Spring fishery on the Willamette because the spring of 2011 was very good and now, to say there will be more spring salmon on the Willamette in 2012, has gotten everybody excited.

We fish the lower John Day River, in the thick of it all. We launch our boat 4 miles east of Rufus Oregon. Don’t worry about the cold, Marvin’s Guide Service has a covered and heated boat for your comfort – and you’ll want the heat this time of year.

We fish a few different ways around the John Day. One way is to troll Wiggle Warts. I like to use bright colors when tolling warts. Another great way to fish Steelhead on the John Day is with a bobber and eggs, or even sand shrimp.

Here is a Little information about the river. The John Day River is a tributary of the Columbia River. It is approximately 281 miles long, making it the third longest free-flowing river in the contiguous United States. There is extensive use of its waters for irrigation. John Day’s free-flowing course furnishes habitat for diverse species, including wild steelhead runs.

Besides Great fishing, you’ll have beautiful scenery to look at all day long.

During this time of year on the Willamette River, I try and scout out some new areas to fish for sturgeon. This way, when the season opens up some time after the first of year, I’ll be ready and know were the Sturgeon are hiding!

So today the spot I fished sturgeon produced very well. We fished 4 hours and had 3 keeper size Sturgeon to the boat and we let go over 20 smaller fish also.

Not much current on the River so you will need to use your trolling motor to help keep your boat tight on the anchor.

I know one thing for sure when the Willamette River opens for sturgeon it is going to be awesome fishing. I guarantee you one more thing when Oregon Fish and Game do open the Willamette River for Sturgeon fishing it won’t likely stay open long.

Well, How about fishing in Portland Oregon with Marvin’s Guide Service because we have a covered and heated boat, an we will do some winter Sturgeon fishing!

In November and December we will be Sturgeon fishing on the Columbia River around the mouth of the Willamette River; this always provides some great fishing action.

January we will be fishing on the Colombia River above Bonneville Dam, around Cascade Locks, Oregon. This fishery is usually allowed 7 days a week and you will find plenty of fat Sturgeon here.

Don’t forget about the Willamette River! We’re still waiting to hear from ODFW on the opening day, it might be as early as January 1st, or later in February. I can tell you this: when the Willamette opens it is going to be some Wild Sturgeon fishing, and, as always, the Willamette River won’t stay open for Sturgeon fishing very long.

If you would like to get on the list to fish the Willamette River when it opens please call now and I will get you on the list. Days go fast for Willamette River Sturgeon fishing. On the Willamette you are only allowed to keep Sturgeon 3 day’s a week when it opens; Thursday-Saturday.
