Columbia River Spring Salmon Season 2012

by on Jan.27, 2012, under Columbia River, Salmon

It is set. The 2012 Columbia River Spring Chinook Salmon season is going to be a short season but I predict a very good season. Oregon and Washington are predicting 314,200 Chinook Salmon to return up the Columbia River, which would be the fourth-largest recorded.

by on Jan.17, 2012, under Sturgeon, Willamette

Well people Oregon fish and wildlife set the Sturgeon season for the Willamette River today.
I don’t like it, but what can I do? We only get 4 days of Sturgeon fishing on the Willamette river.

Sturgeon retention season on the Lower Willamette River (including Multnomah Channel and the Gilbert River) will be open Feb. 17-18 and Feb. 24-25 2012

Bonneville Dam Pool Sturgeon Fishing Report 1-9-2012

by on Jan.09, 2012, under Columbia River, Sturgeon

Here is a quick Sturgeon fishing report for the Bonneville pool. fishing was fair to good this weekend; there were more Sturgeon caught closer to Hood River. I only heard of a few Sturgeon caught down by the Cascade Locks area. While I did put my boat in at Cascade locks, I would head up the Columbia River about 8 or 10 miles. Most Sturgeon were caught in deep water, about 80 feet or better. Water temperatures were about 40 degrees.

Willamette River Spring Salmon 2012

by on Dec.13, 2011, under Salmon, Willamette

Crazy! Here it is almost Christmas and we’re talking about Spring Chinook salmon fishing in Oregon. That’s because Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife is predicting a run of 83,400 Chinook Salmon on the Willamette River this Spring. That number is slightly higher than last year’s return of 80,254. With Chinook salmon numbers like that they should be high enough for a seven-day-a-week fishery and a two fish limit when the fishing season in opens in January.

Above Bonneville Dam Sturgeon

by on Dec.04, 2011, under Columbia River, Sturgeon

Sturgeon fishing above Bonneville Dam will open January 1, 2012. Sturgeon retention is allowed 7 day’s a week until the quota of Sturgeon are caught.
If you are looking to put some fresh Sturgeon in your freezer you want to go in January or early February. I don’t expect Sturgeon fishing above Bonneville Dam to stay open very long. Sturgeon must be between 38 and 54 inches to be able to keep them. You are allowed to keep one Sturgeon a day, but you may continue to catch and release after you have tagged your Sturgeon.

John Day River Steelhead 2011

by on Nov.06, 2011, under General, steelhead

If you’re looking for Steelhead, there’s nothing better than the John Day River in November. Most of these fish are Summer hold-overs seeking cool water before heading off to Idaho. These Steelhead fight hard, run and jump and charge the boat. If you let the the line get slack, they run in the opposite direction and jump and run hard. This is a blast on light tackle.

by on Oct.30, 2011, under Sturgeon, Willamette

I was on Willamette River Sturgeon fishing today (10-30-11). Sturgeon fishing on the Willamette River is catch and release this time of year and since the Willamette River always has a lot of action, it is a great place to fish.

My Day With Adrenaline Hunter

by on Oct.01, 2011, under Columbia River, General, Sturgeon

I got a phone call last week. Instantly I was intrigued. It wasn’t the normal guide trip.
I was asked if I would like to have them do the Comcast Sportsnet show “Adrenaline Hunter,” hosted by Bethy Rossos, on my boat. They wanted to fish for monster Sturgeon on the Columbia River and heard that I was the guide to do it! Of course I said, “yes that would be great!”
